My poem is "Broken Braid at Little Bighorn," a poem about the event most people know as Custer's Last Stand and which I was not really qualified to write. I was glad to be asked and I did my research, but I did not consider at the time that an Indigenous poet should take on the assignment--not a white woman with a heartfelt but romanticized appreciation for the ways of Indigenous peoples of North America.
