ncte19: the real deal and climate action psa

I'm coming to Poetry Friday this week from the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English!  Here is a link to the whole of my presentation on inquiring into the poetic intent of our beginningest beginner writers by offering concrete choices.

Clicking should take you to a Google Slides doc which you should be able to view, download and print as you need to.  We had a great time presenting together!  Here's the team:

And now, your #Climate Action PSA poem for GREEN FRIDAY, Nov. 29
Use the Power of Your Purse, Yes, Follow the Money
Stay Home, Eat Food that You Already Cooked,
with Your Loved Ones Play a Game
that You Already Own
Make an Impact Take a Stand
WIN/WIN/WIN

"This year, on November 29th we are calling on you to take a stand for the planet and support your local community businesses by refusing to give any of your hard earned money to this corrupt financial system. Each year we are sold products built to break or fade out of fashion, making us feel forced to keep perpetually consuming and extracting new resources. By taking part we will be affecting these companies where it hurts them the most, in their profit margins."

Thanks to Rebecca at Sloth Reads for hosting, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  1. Hope you're having a good time at NCTE. Your group dinner looked like such fun! I didn't know about this "Green Friday", Heidi. I support Buy Local & will be working at my tiny used bookstore, hoping customers will come instead of heading out to the big sales. Thanks!

  2. I love the idea of Green Friday--I may add decorating for Christmas with all the stuff I already have and taking a hike in the great outdoors. I love that REI closes on Friday and encourages everyone to enjoy the great outdoors instead of shopping. I'm looking forward to hearing about NCTE

  5. FB pix looked like you all had too much fun at NCTE... I'm sure your presentations and panels were fantastic!!
You know, I greet the anti-shopping campaigns with mixed feelings. I love the planet, try to make decent choices at least most of the time and recycle etc. etc., and I'm certainly wary of the motives & practices of many big corporations. And I've been vegetarian for almost 32 years (The large scale raising of animals for meat has destroyed/is destroying the planet, not to mention the ethical issues re. their treatment.) I certainly agree time with loved ones is way more important than stuff. But getting involved in my little downtown merchants/business association recently has me advocating for supporting real brick-and-mortar stores run by real people, too; our quaint little town wouldn't be here with all its history and preserved natural beauty etc. if folks didn't spend money here. Maybe we can all go outside and play on Friday (or some of us will be on the road!), and shop local on Small Business Saturday, as Linda mentioned. Of course, as the owner of a teeny wee business, I'm biased! ;0) Wishing you and your beautiful family a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

    1. Yes, Robyn!! That is included in the Green Friday idea, that we SHOULD support the small (and larger) businesses that are ethical and planet-friendly RATHER than the giant corporations working to maximize shareholder returns at the expense of the planet. Sorry I didn't highlight that part of it!

  7. I have shared your Green Friday poster Heidi. I hope this is ok. I've never really participated in Black Friday anyway since I'm not much of a shopper. We are trying to pare down our Christmas gift giving this year too!
Thanks also for sharing your presentation. I've skimmed it, but bookmarked it so I can read it in more depth when I have more time.
