caution: poetry may be habit-forming

Some weeks I think, "Maybe I won't post this Friday.  Maybe I'll just read around the posts of others with a little more attention than usual." And then I think about how maybe this is my only chance to write this week, and how I've made this commitment to myself, and how my audience will feel if I don't--

No, that's a joke. I care a lot about audience, but it's not WHY I write this blog; it's for the practice, the habit. And if I think back over the last week, or month, or three months, it's clear: my habit is SOLID.

Since January 1 I've written 42 poems, 11 posts at mjlu, 2 posts at a new blog for my congregation's Earth Ministry, and at least a dozen cogently-argued, strongly-worded letters to various candidates, board members and organizations (and I've filled out a shedload of retirement forms!)

So while I can't quite leave mjlu silent this week, I can do it--I can take a break and read around the posts of others with a little more attention than usual, instead of flinging an ekphrastic dodoitsu up here without sufficient attention.

After all, April looms and I have plans to make about writing in response to All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis, the collection of essays and poems edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson & Katharine K. Wilkinson.  And a cute Canva graphic to go with it. The climate crisis totally deserves a cute Canva graphic!

Meet me here next Friday when I host the FIRST DAY OF NATIONAL POETRY MONTH!!!  Woohoo! Amy LV is our host this week over at The Poem Farm where she is also gearing up for an April project of proverbs.

  1. I'm seeing your NPM poster graphic and realizing I never got the email to order one. Oh well. And I haven't decided if I have a daily poem in me this year. If the last few weeks are any indication, the answer is no, but what you say about habit is a real thing. Maybe if I commit, I'll do it with more ease than if I waffle around.

  4. I am with you, Heidi... the discipline of writing daily, posting weekly, reading the Roundups, has been a gift - but more important, it has awakened in me a connectedness to all those other voices (and Canva graphics!) being lifted in support of "the next right thing." Thank you!

  7. Ta da! Solidly, smoothly piling up poems. Way to go, Heidi. 42 poems is a wonderful amount to celebrate. And, I can't wait to join in the fun of Poetry Month. I have two ideas and I'm going to let them duke-it-out in my head until next week.

  8. I think you've managed very well indeed, Heidi. Doing all those poems for Laura S.'s birthday month was a challenge to find the time for me & I'm not working full time! I would miss you if you didn't post! Thanks for sharing the NPM poster. Like Margaret, I didn't get a note to get one either & I usually make a display of sorts at the store. Have a great weekend!

  11. 42 poems and all those blog posts - that's a wonderful start to the year. And yes, you can break the habit to give yourself space. Sometimes giving space is the thing that opens us up to the next thing. Well done you!

  12. Hello Ms. Heidi, prolific poet and human extraordinaire! As you likely know, I haven't been flinging many poems at all these days, but your track record serves up as inspiration, to be sure. Looking forward to spending a little more time together during NPM.

  16. 42 poems is incredible! Congratulations. I'm so excited about poetry month, even though I haven't solidified my plans! I read picture books (as a volunteer) to two public-school classes each week, and am looking forward to sharing some poems with them.

  17. Good job Heidi, working/teaching is quite a job itself, as our work continues even after we leave our rooms and students… Looking forward to dropping in during NPM, I'll be posting on Fridays and perhaps a bit in between with a focus on birds, thank!
