For National Poetry Month, inspired by Tabatha Yeatts' "Poem-Song Match-Up" project, I'm posting daily Poetry-Music Match-Ups. Yesterday's date was not just momentous as the first day of National Poetry Month, but as the first day of my first-born's life! Perhaps my little April Fool, mon Poisson d'Avril, would enjoy today's Poetry-Music Match-Up (PMMU), selected by Tabatha's own father, Harry W. Yeatts, Jr. As her mother, I have certainly loved Daisy's many "moments of glad grace".
When You Are Old | William Butler Yeats
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,And nodding by the fire, take down this book,And slowly read, and dream of the soft lookYour eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,And loved your beauty with love false or true,But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fledAnd paced upon the mountains overheadAnd hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
Here's a video reading of the poem that brings out a mournful tone of loss in this poem about age.
Mr. Yeatts's musical match is a classic, and brings a more optimistic bounce to the theme.
Thank you, Mr. Yeatts, for this birthday-appropriate Match-Up!

It's time now also to hail Irene Latham of Live Your Poem for hosting a NPM tradition, the Progressive Poem! (Click here for an explanation of how this collaborative venture works.) The poem started yesterday with Laura Purdie Salas at Writing the World for Kids, continues today with Joy Acey at Poetry for Kids Joy, and then continues to make the rounds until I add my line on April 28th. It will conclude on the 30th--always a surprise to see how the crowd-sourced poem turns out! Here's the complete list of contributors:
